A Play? Wouldn’t it be lovely.
Our first taste of culture in the area was our trip to closing night of the performance of My Fair Lady at the Marcus Center in downtown Milwaukee. We had purchased tickets only a few days before and gone with the cheapest available, not knowing the setup and whether or not a little more would affect our view.
We arrived early for the performance and parked in the adjoining parking garage. I quick walk over to the elevator and then a walk across the walkway connecting the garage to the building proper brought us inside with the other early patrons. We walked around a bit to familiarize ourselves with the setup before heading back over to our entrance. Once they started seating, we made our way along the top row of the theater to the middle seats and dug in. People began to fill in the seats around us and we noticed that we were in the highest seats, and the furthest back at that level, but that there were seats lower down that went further away. We flipped through the program, in anticipation for the show until it began.
The play nearly mirrored the movie with only a few more musical numbers. The stage setup was better than I had ever seen with entire sets dropping from the ceiling or rolled in from both sides. The choreography and prop placement was amazing as well as people seemed to always have something to do while on stage.
As with almost any play, however, the performances are the key and here there were two main roles and two others that really must fit for this show to go off. All four of these roles were performed quite well with the girl portraying Eliza doing a magnificent job. Her lines were always as clear as could be with the odd accent in the beginning, but her singing was what really won me over. It was probably better than that of the movie and I was pleased.
We were a little too far up to really appreciate all the details of the sets and costumes, but what I could see was done really well as well. This was my first play in Milwaukee, but I think that it will take allot to top this one. We shall see though, as we are planning to try to see The Lion King, Spamalot, and Avenue Q in the upcoming months as well. My overall opinion of the play was that it was performed very well and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I will definitely be back for others.
