Gone with the Wind

Wind 1 – Storm Door 0

As we turned the corner to enter our neighborhood yesterday, we noticed that something was out of whack.  We then quickly realized that our storm door on the front side of the house was leaning against a bush.  I also thought that I had glimpsed a piece of paper in the crack of the door as well.

So, we pulled into the driveway and I quickly grabbed my bag and made my way over to the front door.  After grabbing the mail out of the horizontal former door, I stepped up onto the front stoop and grabbed the paper jammed in the crack in the door.

I immediately saw that it was hand written type on notebook paper.  I quickly perused the contents before passing it along.  It read as follows.

So, we pondered what to do with the door, whether to leave it where it was, lie it down in the yard, lean it up against the door or wall, or what?  We also had to think about what to do about the mail since our box was screwed to the storm door.  Eventually we decided to leave the door where it was and to purchase a new mailbox the next day.

After getting a good glance at the scene, it became apparent that the door wasn’t ripped off the hinges or the like, as would be expected.  However, it was apparent that the door had actually come apart as there were a couple of inches of it left on the hinges.  Apparently the door was all wood and put together with some pegs, which had broken off.

I thought that this would be the end of the story, but that night, while making dinner, there was a knock on the door.  It ended up being our neighbor who had left the note who had stopped by to explain the situation and what he had seen.

Apparently, he had driven by earlier and saw the door hanging mostly off with a small group of kids standing on the sidewalk looking at it.  He stated that he had walked up and taken down the door and laid it against the bushes and the kids took off.  While he was at the door, he also reminded me that he does work like that cheaply and quickly and I let him know that we still had his number.

So, tonight, we are off to purchase the new mailbox.
